Michael Cooney is a New York State certified high school English teacher and has been teaching at W.C. Mepham High School on Long Island since 2004. He completed an Educational Leadership (School Building Leader) certificate from Queens College, The City University of New York (2015), a Master's degree in English Education 7-12 from Adelphi University (2004), and a Bachelor's degree in English with a Minor in Art History from the University of Delaware (2001). Moreover, Mike has 45 credits of graduate study in Special Education from Brooklyn College, The City University of New York.
Mike has experience teaching a wide range of English and humanities courses across many grade levels that include AP English Literature, AP English Language, Journalism, Mythology, Media, Theater Arts, SAT/ACT Strategies-ELA, and preparation for the New York State Regents Exam. Over the course of his career, Mike has successfully created and taught units of instruction to a wide array of students of varied levels and abilities including students with special needs. As an active member of the school community, Mike has participated in several different activities and most recently proposed and wrote the curriculum for the new science fiction elective, Stranger Fiction. Mike also co-wrote curriculum for a new senior level AP English Language and Composition course. Additional previous activities include a successful season as coach of the Varsity Girls' Cross Country team (2015) at John F. Kennedy High School in Bellmore as well as participation on the District Athletic Eligibility and Professional Development Committees.
Mike's interests include: the study of American literature during the Jazz Age, Science Fiction, Classical Literature, as well as European and American Art.
When not teaching Mike spends time with his family and enjoys running, swimming, tennis, cycling, basketball, and surfing.
